7101Lahser Welcome Freshman Legacy This fall, Brother Rice welcomed one of its largest “Sons of Alums” class. Over 30 students are continuing the family tradition as Brother Rice Warriors. Welcome sons and welcome back dads! National Merit Scholars Tomas Espinosa ‘14 and Sammy Stevens ‘14 scored in the top 1% of the nation on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Because of their test scores, they are among 16,000 students from across the United States that have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Ike Onwuzurike ‘14 is a semi-finalist for 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program. He is in the top 1% and one of the 1,600 semifinalists of more than 160,000 Black American high school seniors under consideration. His performance on the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT differentiated him from the competition. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, all three Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. The Semifinalists and their high school must submit a detailed application providing information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. They must have an outstanding academic record and be endorsed by a high school official, write an essay and earn a high score on the SAT. Principal Michael Segvich, CFC said “We’re very proud of Sammy, Tomas and Ike, and I’m very happy that they are getting the recognition they deserve. They are all leaders and excel in and out of the classroom. They are perfect examples of students of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother education.” Names of the scholarship winners will be released in early April of 2014. In addition, four Brother Rice seniors have been named Commended students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT.
