After a year of transitioning and the BC I was forced to realize that the wavier curls at my crown and the frizz I had could not be heat damage. I suspect my curls had been naturally changing over the years and I just didn’t realize because of the constant straightening. I was really disappointed because my so-called “good curls” (cringing as I type that, I was the worst!) were gone. Eventually I realized the error of my curlism ways, and fixed that mindset quick! Most of the messages I get from women who are tempted to go back to relaxing have the same issue; they expected a different type of pattern than the one they had. It physically hurts me to see stuff like this because all curls are beautiful, wavy to curly to coily.
Some people, and companies think that natural hair is a passing phase, a trend, what do you have to say to them?
We have an open market in SA and I think the more variety naturals have, the better. At the same time I prefer supporting companies that know natural hair is more than a trend and embody the true spirit of the natural hair community in their marketing campaigns. This is just another reason I prefer to support local companies because they recognize their target market, and support us as naturalistas. Personally I cannot imagine being anything other than natural and I know my natural girls feel the same way. People who claim it’s merely a trend are people who do not understand how much more this movement is- it is more than just hair. It’s a spiritual liberation, a mental awakening and a complete lifestyle change all at once! Natural hair just seeps into almost every part of your life, and to generalize it to “just hair” is a grossly ignorant oversimplification.
What advice do you have for naturalistas that would like to venture into blogging?
DO IT! Don’t wait for professional equipment or the right time- I started with absolutely no social media experience (I didn’t have any personal accounts other than Whatsapp, if that even counts?), my 5MP iPhone 4S and a desire to connect with other women. It was a steep learning curve but I have a mentor who is ever-willing to help (shout-out to my lifetime fave @capetowncurly :D) and has inspired me to pay her kindness forward to other aspirant bloggers. It’s grown more than I ever imagined and there is not a day I regret starting Sean Goes Natural. I have met the most inspirational people, and every message or comment asking for hair advice or just hair talk makes my soul so happy! There is a lot of pressure in the industry, but I’ve always just kept it real so I don’t feel the need to have that perfectly curated Instagram feed, or slay in every picture. It’s meant to be personally fulfilling, so just stay true to what you like to do.
Seriously, I love hair chat so don’t be afraid to reach out to me on any of these platforms:
