CONTRIBUTORS Annie Sherman didn’t gravitate to horses until she spent time with Eden in Westport, Massachusetts, for her article “The Horse Whisperers.” When the jet-black brood mare nudged Annie’s notebook right out of her hand and then walked away, Annie knew she was in for a tough interview. The poignant Mean Girls moment taught the freelance journalist and former Newport Life magazine editor to be more present, and that horses are so much more than meets the eye. Shepard Fairey lived in Providence for eight years, where he studied at RISD and worked on his first print studio. At Governor Raimondo’s request, he created the R.I. Angel of Hope and Strength poster, which is this issue’s cover, as an image to lift the spirits of Rhode Islanders whose lives have been disrupted by the Coronavirus crisis. Its themes weave together the state’s blue collar strength and the bravery of frontline workers, as well as “Hope,” the state’s motto. “It was an honor,” he says. Todd McLeish, who reported on an ant survey for this issue’s Current, says his favorite part of writing about local wildlife is the opportunity to join with biologists as they study their target species. But he was just fine with missing out on a field trip for this particular story. Just hearing that Rhode Island is home to vampire ants, needle ants and at least sixty-nine other species was enough to make him want to pull out a can of Raid. 10 RHODE ISLAND MONTHLY l MAY/JUNE 2020
