Birmingham’s atmosphere has been largely affected by immigration and industrialization, which have led to the city’s reputation as the Magic City. Birmingham’s founders recognized that its region had great potential for processing raw materials, specifically iron, coal, and limestone. When the city’s founders met with other investors, they decided to name the city “Birmingham,” after England’s iron and steel center, as it was representation of the booming town that they wanted to create. Soon, people began to extract resources, and facilities for mining were built everywhere.
