Well-Formed Goals

Happy 2018! The beginning of a new year frequently conjures up thoughts of “resolutions” or goal setting. As part of my training to become a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner, I learned the concept of “Well-Formed Goals.”

We are all accustomed to having goals; however, making a well-formed goal is crucial to your success in achieving what you desire. Your brain must believe the goal is doable and possible; otherwise, it will not know how to help you achieve your goal. Following are some guidelines for setting well-formed goals:

1. The goal must be stated in the

positive. (Our brains do not compute

negatives).

2. The goal must be initiated by the

person who desires the goal. (We only

control ourselves; therefore, the goal

must not be dependent on the actions

of another person or situation.)

3. The goal must maintain your eco-

system (your family, friends, job, etc.).

If there is a conflict between the goal

and your personal environment, your

brain will default to keeping you

“safe” and the goal will not be

completed

successfully.

4. The goal must be testable in

experience and sensory-based (Visual,

Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory,

Gustatory). For example, how will you

know when you achieve your goal —

what will you see, hear, feel, smell

and/or taste?

A great way to support and reinforce your goals this year is with the use of Essential Oils.

When working on a project, I love to use Lemon Essential Oil. Lemon is called “The Oil of Focus” and has a clean, fresh scent that assists with clarity and focusing on one thing at a time. Place one or two drops of Lemon essential oil in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and inhale deeply. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so a little bit goes a long way!

Every essential oil has a physical and emotional effect in our bodies. Emotionally, Lemon essential oil inspires natural playfulness and buoyancy in the heart. Lemon oil also helps to release feelings of despair and hopelessness by restoring feelings of joy and happiness. It is sunshine in a bottle!

Peppermint essential oil has energizing and uplifting properties. Peppermint stimulates the brain and increases circulation. Whenever you need a “pick me up,” reach for Peppermint essential oil instead of caffeine. Put a few drops on your fingertips and massage the Peppermint oil into your scalp, being careful to avoid your eyes. The cooling, tingling sensation lasts a while and you will feel invigorated. Peppermint can also help with headaches, memory and focusing.

Year after year, one of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to get healthy and fit. If that is one of your goals
