Are you caught up in a frenzy of preparations for the holidays that you feel you don’t have time to enjoy any of the joy of the season itself? It is annoying that the seasonal boundaries get blurred when holiday decorations seem to go up earlier and earlier every year. December holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah compete for crowded shelf space with October’s Halloween pumpkins and goblins along with November’s Thanksgiving Pilgrims and turkey candle holders.
It’s no wonder you wish the holidays were over with already!
Perhaps you belong to another camp
entirely. Do you pride yourself on being prepared whatever the occasion? Are all your holiday gifts purchased by Halloween, wrapped and stashed away or shipped off before Thanksgiving dinner was roasting in the oven? (That is great, by the way, and I admire you for your organizational skills.)
Does any of this sound like someone who is basking in the comfort and joy of the holiday season?
As I write this, I’m sitting with my new grandchild and marveling at every little thing she is discovering from her fascinating fingers down to her adorable toes. I am especially anticipating being a witness to her reactions of delight to the sights and sounds of the holiday season.
So, I asked myself what if I did that too? What if I approached every day with wonder and awe? Wouldn’t that change my perspective on every level of my being in body, mind and soul?
And now I put that question to you. What if you approach the holidays that way too?
What if you looked at every experience in your life as if it were happening for the first time?
Think about what brings you comfort. A cozy fire on a chilly night while curled up under a down comforter? Receiving consolation of reassuring words while wrapped in a reassuring hug? A long soak in a hot tub with lots of bubbles?
Consider what gives you joy. Does it show up similar to the same way comfort does for you? Spending quality time with family and friend? Escaping in the pages of a great book? Exploring some exotic location on a travel adventure?
The critical thing to remember here is that you can make a point to do one of those things every. Not just during the holidays, but all year long day and approach the activity with childlike wonder as if you have never experienced it before.
I realize this could be daunting to make such a shift in attitude. And I am the first to admit that I am not always “Mary Sunshine.” I do, however, know that when I make the effort to write things down in my journal, they have a better chance of happening. And that is why I suggest to you to take five minutes to write down your intentions for the holidays. Perhaps take five minutes every day to write your intentions for the day and see how that strengthens your focus for the day. And I’d suggest reviewing what you wrote in the morning at the end of the day. Writing things down is the simplest way I’ve found to not only change your perspective, and it also gives you and opportunity to identify and follow your dreams.
Wishing you love, light and happiness and childlike wonder today and every day.
