Interview Preparation:

I wanted to make sure that I was looking my best so I bought a very nice suit and I needed the perfect white high heeled shoes to match. I searched and finally found the style I really liked. Unfortunately, one of the shoes that had an elastic band at the top to hold the toes together was damaged. Well, I thought to myself that I could take these shoes to a shoemaker and he could fix the elastic in the toe, which he was able to do. I was so happy and prepared for the interview.

TIP: If something is defective before purchase, it will be defective after purchase.

Interview Day:

I made sure that I would arrive early and I thought I was looking good when suddenly, the elastic on my shoe pops!!! Oh no, how will I even be able to walk up the stairs to my interview??? I had to think quickly and the idea came to me. I asked the receptionist for a stapler so I could staple the shoe where the elastic broke. Emergency avoided and I was able to walk up the steps to start my interview. As Maggie, the interviewer, started to ask me questions, I felt that she was looking at my shoe so I told her what had happened in the lobby and that I stapled it. She then had a very perplexed look on her face but continued asking me questions.

I then felt that she was staring at my hair. At that time, I did not dry my hair but let it dry naturally. I thought to myself, she does not know me and maybe she thinks that I haven’t washed my hair in years so I just felt compelled to tell her that I felt she was staring at my hair and I wanted her to know it was wet. After I made that comment, she now had another

funny look on her face. I thought to myself, after this interview, I will never get this job but Maggie walked me to the door and told me that she would be in contact with me if I was selected for the position. Sure, enough, my phone rang and I got the job. I was so stunned!!! It was only years later, once I got to know Maggie really well, that I asked her, “That interview was so bizarre, why on earth would you hire me and she replied, “Exactly, you were so bizarre, I knew you would fit right in!!!

TIP: Even though you think the interview is going terribly wrong, keep going as you may be surprised by the results.

A Job Opportunity That Changed My Life:

I interviewed for this job just to help make money to pay for school but what I found was a brand new career path that I had not imagined. I did like teaching children but what I did not like was to make them stay after school or giving any kind of reprimand. This was a job to work in the computer industry where I would learn new technology and then teach it to adults whose companies were paying for them to attend and pay attention. I was constantly learning new things and then teaching others. I was very happy in that position and I was so successful in teaching, training and doing demos for the sales reps that I was later asked to go into a sales position. That sounded frightening to me but my boss saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself and offered me the security that if I did not like sales, I could still have my former job back. As it turned out, I was very successful and like to mentor others when given the opportunity.

TIP: Be open of possible new doors that may open exciting opportunities for you that you would never have imagined.
