Pause and reset. When you ask a question, allow the person to shift from whatever they

were doing to recognize your question and generate their answer. You’ve perhaps seen leaders who know their agenda and charge headlong through it before the team can even think! Pause to allow people the time and thought to respond – because their response, and the relationship, are valuable.

Pause when you’re speaking. I have found that the “pause” is very helpful when speaking. It allows your audience to catch up with you so they can all absorb the important point you have made or enjoy the humorous story you just told.

Pause and open up. Yes, this takes being vulnerable and perhaps feeling uncomfortable, at least at first. But when you open yourself up and share more about yourself and your story, it leads the other person to do the same. From this, we begin to build a story together. It is in those stories and the deep relationships they engender that the magic is created.
