going to London on a school trip on the surface doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment. The back story is that we were waiting for our name to move up on the adoption list. My husband and I were told to go about our lives and not think about how long it would take for our name to go to the top of the list (or how long the list was). I couldn’t stand the thought of sitting at my secretarial desk and having well-wishers give me pep talks about someone adopting and then having six children “of their own!” I had to do something totally different and pursue another one of my dreams.

I decided to go to college full-time. I celebrated my 30th birthday as college freshman. I wasn’t dwelling on how long it would take for us to become a family, as I immersed myself in school and changed who I was being and what I was doing.

Spring 1984 my decisions to make little changes culminated into big celebrations. I was now a college graduate working as an industry professional and I could officially claim the title of Mom! I received my degree in Mass Communications from the School of Liberal Arts. I accepted a position as an Assistant Editor at BUYlines Magazine. And we became the parents of a 6-week-old baby girl.

No special equipment, no detailed instructions, and no worries about doing it wrong. Any way that keeps your hand moving across the page on a consistent basis is the right way to journal for you.

If you think you don’t have time to write, my suggestion would be to make an appointment with yourself to do it at the same time every day. Perhaps set a timer for 5-minutes. I like to play the same music and light a candle.

I tell this story to underscore how you can choose something greater for yourself. Going to study in London is what I choose as part of my story which is a piece of my thread to the universal story.

My point is that we all have a purpose and many of us are fortunate enough to combine our purpose and passion to serve others.

I believe we all have a story that the world needs to hear from us. Our unique story containing the wisdom we’ve gleaned for one of our life experiences.
