IE W !!! ! T E R V WHO IS JEREMY LOOPS? PS IN I’m just a guy who makes folk songs and enjoys doing it. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I think my biggest inspiration is the fact that I studied something I didn’t enjoy and worked in jobs I had no passion for, and then found something, music, that I really enjoyed and wanted to make my life, and keep wanting to make my life. TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR MUSIC. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS GENRE? Completely haphazardly I suppose. I liked folk music growing up; I liked the guitar and the harmonica. I have no formal education in music so I’m unrestricted in my career, and I don’t have any specific genre that I’m trying to make, which is why I have a rapper and a saxophonist on my set so, yeah a bit of everything I guess! IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC IN LO Y E M JE R I got into the industry by mistake I suppose. I have a business degree, but I hated doing the maths and the finances because I wasn’t really good at it. All I wanted to do was play guitar. I’d spend nights just playing guitar until I couldn’t any more. Then I went travelling, I went sailing and took a loop pedal with me. It was just myself and a loop pedal on the boat, and I spent two years figuring out how this thing worked and wrote a load of material. A lot of time alone I suppose. When I got back to Cape Town people were like, “What are you doing? This is awesome!”. Since then I’ve been doing a lot of shows and spending a lot of time figuring out how to make my music better. O HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MUSIC? IF YOU HAD ANY OTHER CHOICE CAREER WISE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I spent quite a bit of time finding this career, so I don’t think I’d be happy doing anything else. But if it wasn’t music, I think I would have been an engineer or a tree planter. IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME PERFORMING IN ZAMBIA? No, I’ve had performances in Livingstone and I’ve come up to do events with the guys from R&G Events for the last 3 years. COMPARED TO OTHER COUNTRIES, WHAT’S ZAMBIA LIKE? I haven’t spent as much time in other African countries as I have in Zambia, but I really enjoy it here, I really like the people. ONE WORD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU PERFORMED? I don’t know, I think people would call me a modern folk artist, which I guess I am, because there’s a lot of beats and all sorts of other stuff going on. So I’d say I’m happy with Modern Folk. I’ve performed in lots of places. I’ve performed all over the USA, Europe and of course Africa. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? I like surfing. I grew up in Cape Town so I grew up surfing. I like hanging out with my friends and working with Greenpop, where we plant trees in schools. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE? My favourite places are based around my favourite shows, so they’re more gig-specific. I like small shows, like in Livingstone, with a small crowd. But then there’s the festivals, which are always epic, and the indie shows which are just amazing. PAGE 26
