Revive - A Quarterly Fly Fishing Journal | Page 3

The air was bitterly cold and the snow stuck to their boots as they trudged along towards their favorite run. The car battery barely turned over that morning as they fired up the truck for the first time since they had gone to get beer the night before, not that long ago, too long for a car battery at 2 degrees. It only took about 5 casts until the icy guide game started and every other cast was spent not only fruitlessly searching for frigid anadromous fish, but also performing rod and reel maintenance in the off chance they actually hooked what they came for. The wind was low but when it hit it was brutal and a sobering reminder that humans do not have fur, nor is water conducive to comfort in such situations...This is winter steelheading though, this is winter fly fishing. This is why we come. Because its better than sitting around doing nothing and the memories of that fish caught while extremities threaten to secede from us will warm our angling souls forever. Enjoy the suck. Catch a fish.
