Setting the hook on a tarpon isn't a simple task: imagine trying to pull a hook through a sheet of metal. Trout sets don't cut it, and are likely to get you a free pass off the casting platform, accompanied by a string of profanity. If you remember to strip set and it sticks, do it again. And then a few more times for good measure. This is approximately the point when the tarpon will jump, you'll forget to bow, and your rig will come rocketing back toward you. If you pass this test, make sure the hook is still set, kind of like tugging on your dog's leash when it gets carried away. Maybe all these strip sets will make up for forgetting to strip set on the next one. Then proceed to fight the fish like your life depends on it. They WILL fight you all day if you don't put the heat to them, and then after all that, they'll go belly up or get snapped in half by a shark after an easy meal. Your best bet at a healthy release for the fish is striving to end the fight as fast as possible, assuming the tarpon doesn't end it early for you.
