Children spend over 30 hours a week in school so we want a good understanding of what they are experiencing and to be able to support them. We want our children to make a positive contribution in school and be godly examples. Through talking with them daily we find out about their struggles, then offer encouragement and advice so they can face situations with confidence. We usually pray before school for the teachers and for God’s protection. We read God’s word together with our children and we have prepared ourselves to answer some of the challenges to faith and lifestyle that they will face in school. We know that school can be a spiritual battleground. We show interest in the school, going to the parents evenings and sometimes going in to talk to teachers about specific issues. When one of our boys was about to have the ‘growing up’ presentation, parents were invited to preview the teaching video. I felt the content was too much too soon and, in some ways, wrong. I shared this during meeting, the teacher supervising accepted my comments well and the school decided not to show one video. We chose for our son not to participate in the lesson giving our reasons. Another Christian parent later thanked me for speaking up. When we have the courage to stand up and say the right thing we find other people are often thinking the same. schools, this meets a few times a year with the headteacher to discuss issues that arise. At the boys’ secondary school I recommended Chris to one of the senior teachers as a motivational speaker for an assembly. He was invited to speak to the whole sixth form and gave his testimony pointing the boys to Jesus. Schools are full of challenges, but also present many opportunities for Christ.
