THE SOIL WAS HARD AND IMPENETRABLE, DUE TO THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAD TRAMPLED IT UNDERFOOT OVER THE COURSE OF MANY YEARS. THE BIRDS COULD EASILY FIND THE GRAIN AND EAT IT, SO THERE WAS NOT EVEN A CHANCE OF IT BEARING FRUIT.
