TEACHING TH(E) - SOCIETY: EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES Oana Pop, Colegiul Tehnic Independența Sibiu Abstract: This article has a simple structure concentrated around the concept of e-Society and what it embodies and what educational strategies teacher should approach to obtain efficiency. The aim of the study is to offer a clear image of what the term e-Society depicts and what are the prospects of having to adapt to compete with what technology has developed regarding teaching, knowing that the teachers have an enormous influence on student learning. It is always a challenge when it comes to having to identify how to use the study of languages in ways that are accessible and meaningful to others. Key words: e-Society, educational strategies, e-/learning, efficiency, teaching. Motto: “The best thing about being sad is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies; you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder in your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then – to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the thing for you.” (White, 1996, p. 90) 1. Overview The concept proposed by this article is e-Society and what educational strategies one should approach to improve teaching related to this particular notion. My definition of e-society embodies the result of our abilities to design a device that can constrict time and space. The mechanism consists of two elements: first, the digitalization of information (no matter the form of information we are talking about) and second, the possibility offered by the internet of reaching multiple locations in the world from any other spot on the globe at the same time – in real-time. The e-Society is, therefore, the product that allows us the transmission of infinite amounts of data no matter the time or place in between multiple fields. Due to the rapid development of technology, we can trace the revolutionary changes that have taken place in human interaction; moreover, we can now personalize and customize our interactions in ways unthinkable a few years ago. With these aspects in mind, the mechanism, the engine behind our galloping progress towards the ultimate e- Society is considered to be the continuously increasing opportunity to access digital data from mobile appliances anywhere just by a finger`s touch. The concept of e-Society clearly follows the pattern of words like e-Learning and e- Business (two of the first areas of e-Society that emerged before the actual concept). Nowadays, the term connects all the structures that consist of one or more e-Communities involved in areas such: e-Democracy, e-Government, e-Health, e-Commerce, e-Trade, e- Money and last but not least, e-Learning and e-Teaching. Discussing generations and their gadgets we can see that many of the devices have become popular with youngsters, teenagers or young adults. They are all leading the path towards increased mobility (desktops have lost ground, the functions of a mobile phone are now that of a browser, music player, video player/recorder, camera, gaming 69
