Wales, I use a video entitled Behind the Tudors, in which Natalie Dormer, one of the
lead actresses in the latest TV series The Tudors, explains the character of Henry
VII. Further discussions follow in order to facilitate understanding of this iconic
figure in British history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fumALoX7CrM
e. Similarly, when teaching icons of various English-speaking countries, videos are a
very good way of getting the students acquainted with specific landmarks for
different cultures. The following is the link for a video on the icons of The United
States of America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNN_y364FIs
f. Not only videos, but a full movie can prove to be useful in order to pinpoint
important moments in the history of The United States of America. I have
successfully used so far The Great Gatsby to give students an insight into The
Roaring 20s/The Jazz Age in America and Hidden Figures to inspire discussions
and analysis of segregated America in 1960 and John Glenn’s first space travel.
The above represent a selection of videos I have used. It is a short list of the most
efficient ones, but examples abound, and, fortunately more can be found online if needed.
5. Conclusion
Videos are a great resource to use in class in order to make it more motivating and
memorable. By using a video alongside the traditional teaching methods one can help
instil a better understanding of a subject into more of the students.
