Definition. Time management is a process of managing the time according to the need
and requirement of work and activities in order to utilize, save and not waste the time for
an effective organizational progress and success. Time management includes the
construction and implementation of time table, distribution of subjects, total number of
periods taken by teachers, lesson planning, regularity and punctuality of teachers in school
and class, advance planning of class activities, counselling and guidance of teachers, time
allocation to students individually, organization and preparation of co-curricular activities
for students.
Working as a teacher requires excellent time management skills. Teachers need
to balance the long-term goals of the classroom, the immediate educational needs of the
students and the large volume of paperwork that comes with every assignment. Between
writing lesson plans, grading exams and actually teaching, teachers often feel that it is
impossible to fit everything into the allotted time frame. Although the career path seems to
have too much work for the number of hours in a day, it is possible to manage the situation
and clear extra time in the classroom and outside of class. With effective time
management skills, teachers can increase their productivity and provide a better education
for their students .If the teacher wants to teach the content properly and efficiently
according to the needs, requirements and the interests of the students then it must be
done through good and advanced planning, procedure, regularity and punctuality, time
schedule and effective procedure of evaluation. However, above all items are possible to
implement through time management of teachers in and outside of schools. Because a
teacher is the helper, opportunities provider, implementer, designer of activities,
knowledge share outer, problem solver, career counsellor and time manager.
A teacher who employs time management principles will handle routine functions
quickly and more efficiently, leaving more time for educational matters. There is also a
symbolic concern: how a teacher uses time sends a message to others in the school. Thus
when teachers spend their time on “busy work” and maintenance activities, they convey
the message that “not making waves “is important to them. Student behaviour and often
performance will reflect the tone set by the teacher. Alternatively, managing time well, they
can spend more time on improving student performance, developing interpersonal
relationships, and making programmatic improvements.
Here are five effective time management tips teachers can use every day:
1. Organize the day by priorities
Teacher time management must start with setting priorities and organizing the day
around the most important tasks. Setting priorities can help keep teachers on track
throughout the day, even when the unexpected occurs and the workload can seem
overwhelming. Planning is of critical importance in the management of time.
