The countries of South America have a higher exchange rate compared to the countries of North America and the countries of Western Europe while the country with the highest exchange rate is Ecuador .
Of the countries of South America , the country with the most publications per inhabitant is Chile . The scientific production per inhabitant in the countries of North America and Western Europe is higher in relation to the countries of South America . For example , Finnish publications per inhabitant is almost 5 times more than scientific production in Chile .
In the same framework , the number of journals per inhabitant of the countries of North America and Western Europe is higher in relation to the countries of South America . For example , the number of journals in the United Kingdom per inhabitant is almost 15 times larger than the number of scientific journals in Chile ( Papapostolou , Papapostoulou and Stefos , 2013 ), cited by ( Castellano , Stefos , Sánchez , Torres and Reiban , 2018b ).
