The sports medical examination (SME) is a unique moment in the relationship between the doctor and the
athlete. It is the first moment to get in the practice of a sport that is loved so much. It must be methodic,
exhaustive, and so time-consuming. It is needed to talk with the athlete, to know the eventual complains and
the medical antecedents, personal and of the family. It is required to see the athlete, to undress him and to
check for asymmetries. It is necessary the auscultation and the palpation, of the arterial pulses and other
sites. The curves are checked, and the asymmetries are identified. And some measurements are made, like
the blood pressure, body weight, height (at least). The EKG is red and then a decision came out. At the end,
the athlete has clearance … or not, this is, there are physical conditions for sports practice on that moment or
there are temporary or definitive circumstances that deserve further attention. It is a methodic, exhaustive,
and for this reason a time-consuming exam, done by the one that is able to do it. It is not an administrative
act, it is not a business. It is a medical act, is an act of dignity and respect. Of responsibility. I just receive some
advertisement. It is written that a SME costs 7.50€. And they write that it includes “medical evaluation, EKG,
blood pressure, weight and height”, and “it can be done at the club facilities after advance booking”. I was
astonished for so a such generous offer. To make a SME at this cost, and taking into consideration the dimen-
sion of its content, it can only be an act of generosity and of great altruism. I should congratulate these doc-
tors that dispose their competence at the service of sport. They are generous, no doubt about that, because,
with such price, they perform a methodic, exhaustive and time-consuming SME. But do they really do? I’m
going to call and find out about in a minute, because I just received a better offer: 7.00€! Basil Ribeiro, director
