Rev. Medicina Desportiva informa, 2018; 9(3):2 Prof. Doctor Paul Amado Orthopedist. Medical Clinic of Foz and Lusíadas Hospital of Porto You are an orthopedic surgeon with a master’s degree in sports medicine. You’re very fond of sports, aren’t you? Yes, actually sports medicine, especially the sports ortho- traumatology, have always attracted me a lot, and since when I was a resident in ortho- pedics I already felt that it was a very little area understood by the traditional orthopedic surgeon, since it has very specific pathologies. I remember, for example, that one of the most prominent techniques in orthopedics, the arthroscopy of various joints, is widely linked to sport, with its historic beginnings at the Tokyo Olympics in the 60s. I also have several scientific papers on stress fractures and my master’s thesis is on ankle instability. The feet are decisive for most sports. Is there a need for a specific medical examination before practicing sports? The foot and ankle are two ana- tomical areas of great importance in sports medicine. In several sports modalities, one of the pathologies with the highest incidence is the ankle sprains (45% in basketball) and the sequels that then result. What are the most frequent injuries to the feet/ankles? As I mentioned earlier, the ankle sprain is a frequent pathology, but a huge array of pathologies exists in other sporting modalities. For example, in track and field the ankle 2 may 2018 www.revdesportiva.pt impingement syndrome indicates the arthroscopy of the ankle, either anterior or posterior. being, in my view, the most beauti- ful clinic of Porto. I invite anyone to visit us. ... and which ones need to be operated? ... and your doctorate? The ankle sprain in its acute phase rarely has indication to operate, however about 10% of these cases evolves into the instability of the ankle after some time and then they need surgery, because at that time it is already possible to repair arthroscopically the ligaments of the ankle. If there was more prevention... Yes, prevention with good functional preventive rehabilitation programs is indispensable to lessen the likeli- hood of occurrence of ankle sprains. We developed this program in the physiotherapy of the Foz Medical Clinic. 6. You are now the clinical direc- tor of the Foz Medical Clinic in Porto. Interesting, right? On May 1, 2017 I was appointed as the clinical director, which is from the beginning a person al challenge and responsibility, since it it is a health unit with good reference at Oporto for 32. From the very start, my first challenge was to modern- ize the facilities. We managed to acquire a building, about 30 meters away from the former location, also historic, and now we have we have the triple of the capacity and modern facilities. Thus, we managed to maintain the nostalgia of the pre- vious installations, but now with a modern and very functional aspect, Yes, I finally finished my Interna- tional Doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine of Santiago de Compostela, last day 24/4/2018, after 10 years of research, with the grateful pleasure of having had the highest classifica- tion, which was also taken up by the dean of the University. It was about a subject not directly linked to sport, although it may indirectly have this aspect. The study demonstrated the importance in the use of morpho- genic bone proteins (BMP2) in the interface of ankle prostheses, tripled the quality of integration, greatly diminishing the time needed for this reaction. It has practical use in the application of all prostheses in orthopedics. This study is innovative, and nothing had yet been pub- lished. In relation to the PRP, platelet growth factors (PDGF), the study did not show any particular interest in the osteo-integration of prostheses but proved the interest in the repli- cation and mutagenesis of the stem cells, which reinforces what we have already known about this technique, with special interest in the treat- ment of many sports injuries.
