It is the result of a voluntary decision that is made by an autonomous and capable person . This process essentially aims at accepting a proposed treatment , and understanding the nature of the treatment , its consequences and the inherent risks . It is based on three principles : information ( language appropriate to the patient ), understanding and agreement . According to the Basic Health Law , a patient has the right to be informed about their situation , the treatment alternatives and the probable evolution of their condition . Particularly in surgical procedures , Dr António Martins considers that “ we must be extremely careful in the way we inform patients , always using clear and understandable language .
