and it is not possible to preview with
security the result of the interven-
tion if would have been carried on
over the time and (3) the studies
about the acute response were done
with eccentric contractions, which
might not correspond to the major-
ity of situations that the athlete is
exposed. In conclusion, NAIDs seem
to have the capacity to modulate the
responses on the adaptation to the
exercise, either on short but also on
long-term, and could eventually give
a competitive advantage on certain
occasions. However, more studies are
needed to (1) better understand this
phenomenon and the mechanisms
that explains it, (2) better character-
ize an eventual sports advantage, (3)
understand if this advantage is also
applied to the professional athletes;
(4) define which drugs, dose and tim-
ing of more efficacy and (5) consider
if it makes sense to add any NAIDs
to the List of WADA. About this last
item, and besides there are authors
that stand up for the integration
of paracetamol in this List due to
an eventual sports advantage, it is
useful to remind that this is a very
effective drug, safe and with great
utility on a series of clinical situ-
ations, which also applied to the
athletes.

3. For the sake of simplicity of exposure,
paracetamol was included on the designa-
tion of NAIDs, but, in strict, paracetamol
has very weak anti-inflammatory activity,
and that is why some authors don’t consi-
der it as NAIDs
SPAT, The Portuguese Society of
Arthroscopy and Traumatology
on Sports, has a new site. This is
a very structured site, not stuffed
with contents, that “breaths” and
with a very interesting visualiza-
tion. On it, it is possible to read
about its history, the founders,
the actual members of the board,
the announcement of some sci-
entific and other meetings, and
more contents. One important
link is related to the procedure to
become a member. It is important
to be member, for SPAT that is dig-
nified and also for the new mem-
ber that will be part of a scientific
structure that will give him back
benefits and prestige. The annual
fee is small, and this won’t be the
demotivating element. It is a reno-
vated site, but still very young,
and it is yet on a growing process,
certainly in the direction of the
spreading of actual scientific med-
ical papers, so important for the
continuous updating. The section
for congresses announcements
will soon be a growing section as
well. It is a flashy site, a clean site.
Congratulations to SPAT, congrat-
ulations to the past-President, Dr.
Henrique Jones, for this legacy.
In the meanwhile, Dr. Henrique
Jones (on the right) passed the tes-
timony to Dr. Luís Branco do Ama-
ral, which is the new President for
the next biennium. SPAT, this way,
it is still on, with good leadership,
and it will be a national reference
for medical education and aggluti-
nator of the knowledge on this so
specific and important area of the
orthopedics and sports medicine.
