On the other hand, this enormous
muscle activity avoids the relax-
ing sleep, and the person not only
doesn’t get rest, but also wakes with
fatigue.
And about the tooth gutters?
Figure 7 – Occlusal imbalance and bad
dental positioning
Figure 8 – Typical positioning of the jaw
and the existence of wear facets
The night muscle relaxing tooth
gutters, besides a better cranio-
mandibular relation, they allow
a reduction of the forces applied
during the bruxism, causing relaxa-
tion of the cranio-cervical system.
On the other hand, since there is no
contact between the teeth, the wear
is avoided and, consequently, the
appearance of wear facets.
When a tooth is broken during an
sports event, what should be done
right after?
If possible, one should look for the
tooth fragments and keep them in
milk or in the saliva of the victim. At
the same time, the wound should be
cleaned and it should be foundout if
there is need to suture the lips and
the mucous.
Figure 9 – Adhesion of the fractured frag-
ment with restoration material
nothing is shown, but on the high-
level athlete these small changes
might cause overload on the muscle
chains with repercussion on the
injuries.
... bruxism might interfere with
sleep and the night rest…
And a lot! The very frequent grind-
ing teeth, known as bruxism, is an
unconscious phenomenon, occur-
ring predominantly during the night.
There are two types: the centric and
the eccentric. On the first one, there
isn’t any mandibular movement,
only exists a small tightening of the
teeth with a lot of strength. On the
second case, there is already projec-
tion and lateral movements of the
mandibula bone, causing destruc-
tion of the teeth (wear facets) (Figure
8). Both types of bruxism will cause
increased activity of the jaw lift
muscles (masseter, temporal, pteri-
goideus), causing contractures of
these muscles, and not only on
these, and a diffuse pain on the face.
This means that the visit to a
dentist is urgent?...
The visit should be right away to
evaluate the extension of the tooth
injury and to decide a correct treat-
ment plan. It might be needed to
proceed to a endodontics of the
tooth if the fracture includes the
pulp.
There are many athletes with teeth
malalignment. In the context of an
athlete, should it be corrected?
The most important is to analyze the
contacts and the occlusal guides. On
the lateral movement, there should
be only contact of the canines and
on the protrusion movement there
must exist only contact between the
superior and inferior incisors. When
such good joint doesn’t exist, the
dental repositioning should be done
in order to avoid dental, articular,
muscle and tendon problems.
