This will be the last edition of the Review for 2019.

As the year draws to and end it is not only a time to plan for next
year, but also a time to reflect on the past. Looking at the future,
2020 marks the twin centenary of the Faculty of Veterinary
Science at Onderstepoort, as well as the South African Veterinary
Association (SAVA).

With this in mind, our plan for the future is to look into the past
by honouring some South African pioneers in the veterinary
field. Real people that in some way made a huge contribution to
the development of veterinary science and practice as we know
it today. The Review will be contributing in the build-up to the celebrations, by publishing a
tribute to at least one pioneer in every issue until 2020.
I would like to appeal to all our readers to please submit tributes (for publication in The
Review) of any pioneer that they know of that played a role in developing ruminant veterinary
medicine/practice. Stories of lecturers, practitioners, researchers, even veterinary employers
are welcome. It does not all have to be serious. Some funny anecdotes or stories of eccentricity,
to make us chuckle, are also welcome.
I would like to thank my support-personnel at the Review, especially Heinrich van Rijn and
Madaleen Schultheiss, for their unyielding and level-headed support and advice during my
first year as editor. The magazine changed a lot in the past year. Going full colour and going
interactive by adding QCR codes. We have great new plans for next year. Watch this space.
A big thank you also goes to all the contributing authors. Writing an article takes a lot of research,
time and effort, especially since the majority of you do it in your spare time (of which you have
very little). Your efforts are truly appreciated.
All of us at The Review wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
