If you hire someone to do the chore, make cer8
2 tain that he or she also has advisory skills and
authority. Make certain that you listen to what
•
he tells you about your financial condition. Use
A that information and keep yourself well enough
U informed so that every moment of every day
G you know how much you owe and who owes
U how much to you. Know your costs and prices.
S
Y
T Again, every moment of every day. Your prices
have to include your real costs of doing busi2
0 ness. Suppliers change their prices; you have
1 to react quickly to remain profitable.

Sure you can delegate, but if you donʼt have the
information you need to base decisions on at
your fingertips, then you have failed to “manage.” You will be tempted to place blame. “SoY
and-so didnʼt get me all the figures I asked for.”
Never mind. If your bookkeeper isnʼt doing the
job you need done, find another bookkeeper.
But make certain that you keep the books current in the meanwhile, or you will make decisions based on old, erroneous information. You
Y
will set prices based on old costs, and you may
go broke.
The point is:
never delegate management functions.
Y
You can hire help, but the
responsibility ultimately
belongs to the boss. You
Y
may enjoy selling more,
but to stay in business, to
become a profitable business, you have to manage. If you donʼt want to,
go to work for someone
who does.
