FORUM WORKSHOP Forum Workshop 7 4 • A U G U S T 2 0 1 4 HIRE ONLY THE PEOPLE YOU NEED When you start, hire only those people whose skills will enable you to keep your business in operation. Do as much of the work as you know how; and do all of the managerial functions – record keeping, bill paying, capital expenditure deci- sion-making. As the business prospers, you must reward those people who helped you launch your company. Donʼt hire more people because you donʼt want to do your own bookkeeping. You need to put that money into the Y paychecks of the people who got you where you are, because when they started with you they took a big risk, and they probably accepted a salary that was a lot less than they are “worth.” The risk they took was that you might fail. They need monetary evidence that you are not failing. The y need regular raises as your profitability increases. They have become highly skilled since you hired them. They are part of the reason that you have stayed in business this long. That means they are of value, and money will keep them in your employ a little longer. continued..
