Physical Abuse The most commonly recognised form of family violence includes: hitting, pushing, choking and slapping. Not all women experience physical abuse. Other forms of family violence can be just as harmful as physical abuse. Sexual Abuse Forcing anyone, including a spouse or partner, to have sex or perform sexual acts against their will. Abusers may say: • • • If you love me you will do this for me It’s your duty as my wife/partner I’ll have an affair if you don’t, it will be your fault Emotional Abuse Controlling a person through threats, humiliation or manipulation. Abusers may: • • • Undermine your ability as a mother and carer by saying ‘you are a bad mother and wife’ Threaten to jeopardise your visa status Assert their role as the man of the house to defend controlling or abusive behaviour
