Dear Friends, The power of music is undeniable. Music’s innate ability to connect, to communicate, to enrich, to humanize, to transport, to transcend barriers and differences, and to promote healing and peace is what makes it such a transformative force. For more than 100 years, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has enjoyed the distinction of being one of our country’s preeminent orchestras and one of our region’s top cultural gems. With 89 world premieres—including 42 commissioned works, 7 international tours, and 3 Grammy Awards—our world-renowned Orchestra has earned a coveted spot among the world’s finest orchestras. Through its innovative and forward-thinking approach, the BSO continually pushes boundaries. Its reputation as a national leader for the role that orchestras and cultural organizations should play in society has earned it high praise. Its long-standing commitment to education, to inclusion, to relevance, and to accessibility for all has demonstrated its dedication to bringing music out of the concert halls. Now, as the BSO embarks on its second century, it stands poised to achieve even more. Today, we enthusiastically join the ranks of all those who have come before us in chairing an effort that will build a more robust endowment to sustain the BSO’s growth and vitality, strengthen the competitiveness of the BSO as a destination orchestra for musicians and guest artists, bring music into the lives of more children and youth, and build the next generation of symphony patrons. On the following pages, we invite you to meet some of the many individuals—community leaders, BSO board members, musicians, volunteers, patrons young and old—whose lives have all been impacted profoundly by music and the BSO. No doubt their experiences and stories are very similar to your own. As you read their stories, please consider sharing your own and joining us in this ambitious and worthwhile endeavor that will set the foundation for another century of extraordinary music!
