Residential Estate Industry Journal 5 | Page 4

From the PRESIDENT ARC turned 10 years old on 1 April 2018. Over this time we have worked with many amazing communities and developed relationships with incredibly professional individuals. These include estate managers, directors and trustees, members of HOA staff and best-of-breed service providers who have become long-term business partners with ARC. During this time, we had the privilege of attending and speaking at international residential community conferences in the USA, Europe and the UAE, and have developed strong relationships with residential community practitioners in these countries as well as with the Australian and Canadian Residential Community Industry. These relationships led to the establishment of the Community Association Institute of South Africa, and the newly formed Residential Community Council. ARC also served on the World Congress of Community Association Management and the International Research Council. I was also privileged to have been awarded the CAI rising star award in 2010. The industry has experienced a decade of change, with new legislation being passed including the new Companies Act, the Community Schemes Ombudsman Service Act, and the Sectional Titles Management Act. Apart from this, director and trustee roles and responsibilities have changed, and expectations of HOA and Body Corporate members have increased. Issues relating to good corporate governance, the application of policies and procedures, imparting best practices in the management of communities, and the implementation of internal dispute resolution practices have all become top of mind on the agenda of directors, trustees and management. ARC has held six annual industry conferences attended by over 1,000 member communities, over 200 regional chapter meetings and 100 workshops, and has developed over 600 best practice solutions for its members. Growing from 11 founder members in 2008 to around 350 members in 2018, we remain at the forefront of most issues and challenges facing all residential communities in South Africa. We are proud of the 5th annual journal – launched at the annual conference at Serengeti Estates on 13 and 14 September 2018, and trust you will get value from this edition. Jeff Gilmour 04
