The recent announcement that Toyota’s U.S. headquarters is coming to the state is but one indication that the rest of the world understands that Texas is firing on all cylinders. But it’s hardly time to sit back and rest easy with our boots off and a can of Lone Star in our hands. Eight universities are designated as emerging research universities in the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s accountability system: Texas State University (TxStU), Texas Tech University (TTU), the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), University of Houston (UH), and University of North Texas (UNT). The THECB reported earlier that Texas Tech University and University of Houston met eligibility as an emerging research university. So the state and its public universities are making progress as this chart shows.
