International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO)
The International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO) is a union of neuroscience organisations which aims to promote
and support neuroscience training, collaborative research and advocacy around the world.
The IBRO Advanced School of Neuroscience serves as a forum to provide both theoretical and technological advances
in key areas of neuroscience to PhD and postdoctoral fellows selected from developing countries within the Asia-Pacific
region. This annual event hosted by BRIMS also enables networking and long-term collaborative opportunities between
the participants and high-profile neuroscience researchers within the region, enhancing Monash University’s portfolio as a
research-based university.
In 2016, we organised the 3rd IBRO Advanced School – Project Management: Toward a Successful Neuroscientist from
1-30 November. This month-long program encompassed the region’s pioneering cutting-edge work in our state-of-the-
art facilities, and covered a range of advanced techniques such as bio-imaging and histology, gene manipulation and
detection, neurochemical and proteomics analysis, animal handling and behaviour analysis. Participants were taught how
to solve problems when conducting a project from different perspectives and to understand the importance of logical but
feasible planning in neuroscience research.
The organising committee selected 17 participants from China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Pakistan and
Malaysia to attend the one-month advanced school at Monash University Malaysia.
