Research Expedition Brief Expedition Overview | Page 8

Silurian is a hard-working research vessel, spending all year surveying the waters off the west coast of Scotland.  While she isn’t a luxury cruiser, she is comfortable and has a homely feel.

Absolutely no experience is required to participate in an expedition, even if you’ve never set foot on a boat, you’re welcome to join.  Full training in all aspects of the experience is provided: from how to acoustically access the ocean soundscape, to using the toilet!

Our citizen scientists occupy the forward section of the vessel – with three small cabins, each containing two berths and a limited amount of storage space for personal belongings. Two of the cabins have bunk style beds, with the other cabin housing a twin double berth. Some bunks are short and close to the ceiling so be prepared to cope with limited space.

Participants will share a bathroom, with a toilet, basin and shower. Water is limited and we encourage all to conserve as much as possible during the expedition  This means that not everyone can shower every night, although some anchorages have shower facilities.  There is a large saloon space in the heart of the boat where most time will be spent in the evening, eating and socialising. The galley is well equipped for a yacht, and everyone is expected to help with the cooking duties during the expedition, dishes include pasta, curry, stews or rice dishes.  Most diets can be accommodated during an expedition, please indicate on your booking form if you have any dietary requirements.

A strong team spirit is essential when living and working on board a research vessel. Everyone is expected to contribute to all aspects of the expedition: data collection, cooking and cleaning. Please bear in mind that you will be living in close contact with ten other people (six participants and four crew), in a rather confined space, for a number of days. Each expedition recruits a wide variety of people, often from different walks of life, which adds to a more rounded experience for all.  Participants often form lasting friendships which is lovely to witness.
