Pacific Hurtgen: The U.S. Sixth Army's Ordeal in
Northern Luzon, 1945
Dr. Robert Young
When forced to flee the Philippines during the spring of 1942, American
General Douglas MacArthur famously remarked: "I shall return."
MacArthur did exactly what the Japanese and their commander,
General Yamashita, wanted. In a fruitless campaign, both tactically and
strategically, four US infantry divisions would be debilitated to satisfy
General MacArthur's quest that no Filipino land remained occupied by
the Japanese.
