TRAVEL & ADVENTURE to three minutes after finishing a freediving course. All learned through a series of discussions and applications in a pool and during actual dives. His curriculum consists of several hours in a classroom, in the swimming pool, then finally in the open sea. Apart from the lessons learned during a freedive training, students also get a chance on hooking up with more experienced freedivers during regular meetings in Moalboal every first weekend of the month. During these meetings you’ ll hear techniques that works for a different kind of freediver.
Wolfgang likes to imagine his blood circulating in the different veins of his body. Some like to imagine a triangle on top of their forehead as the center of energy. While others like to accept things as it is underwater, and recognize its dangers.
Recognizing the potential and real dangers of freediving is dealt with properly during Wolfgang’ s class. Just like any other sport, or like caving and spelunking, you make a false move, accidents will occur.
Accidents don’ t just happen. They are a sum of all prior events that messed up. Similar to freediving, when you lack education, preparation, and training, things can potentially go wrong. But with proper education and training, you can let go, enjoy, and break your personal records.
Advocacies Deeper Than the Deep
Do you like your status quo on things that you love to do? We climb the highest mountains and dive the deepest seas, what for? Have we thought of a deeper meaning behind our passions? Did the buck really stop there? Think about it, what will fuel us to achieve more?
Most of the time we need not look further to find deeper meanings on things we love to do. Five years ago, Wolfgang came to Cebu to teach scuba diving and freediving. But prior to coming here, after finishing ECE and Psychology, he already saw a stressful life unfolding before him, a manifestation brought about by his current eight-hour job.
After talking to several divers, reading up on a book on“ dive sites to see before you die”, and a few more encouragements from friends, he packed his bags, booked the next flight to the Philippines, and headed to the warm waters of Cebu.
Wolfgang’ s love for freediving in the Philippines made him find another form of freedom, freedom on using his“ gilled” and“ man from Atlantis” talents by educating Moalboal’ s local fisher folks soon or in the near future. Like his belief on proper education and training to enjoy freediving in a safe way, teaching the local fishermen not to over-fish and to be selective of their catch while freediving properly, will not only benefit marine life and promote sustainable means of livelihood, but will also make him a freediver with a vision, who has a deeper meaning behind his passion. •

An advocacy deeper than the deep, Wolfgang plans on teaching local fisher folks( Badjau) on how to free dive properly; especially on equalization techniques since most of them end up being deaf if not being able to equalize while freediving.
