Just seen another client walk straight past the rowing machines? Caroline Roberts discusses the benefits of pulling them back towards it.

O ver the last few years, more and more people have been waking up to the benefits of indoor rowing. It’ s always been a major part of CrossFit, and recently boutique rowing studios have been springing up in trend-setting cities, such as New York. Now, British Rowing has launched the Go Row Indoor initiative to promote it as a mass market activity. And, with a growing competitive scene, indoor rowing is well on the way to becoming a sport in its own right.

Every stroke uses 85 % of your muscles, covering nine major muscle groups.
The rowing machine has got to be one of the most effective pieces of fitness equipment around. Each stroke uses 85 % of your muscles – legs and gluteals power the drive phase; muscles of the arms, shoulders and back pull the handle towards the body; while the core works to maintain stability.
It’ s also a great cardio workout and is very efficient at fat-burning, typically using around 300 calories in 30 minutes – pretty impressive for a‘ sitting-down exercise’. What’ s more, it’ s low impact and is suitable for all abilities and levels of fitness.
Using the rowing machine can certainly help your clients to see big gains in a relatively short period of time.
