• Student will understand the biomedical de-
vice industry in terms of its size and scope,
current trends, and products with emphasis
on biomedical companies in Minnesota.
• Students will receive an overview of the
creation of a medical device from initial
conception through development testing,
validation, manufacturing, clinical trials, and
final approval by regulatory agencies.
Projects, Activities, etc.: Research, presentations and
one or more site visits to biomedical companies.
Instructional Focus: Small and large group
discussion plus presentations by industry repre-
sentative. A college level text will be used.

device manufacturing with emphasis on

• An introduction to the development cycle of a
medical device, world class manufacturing prac-
tices, materials selection, manufacturing strat-
egy development, sterility and clean rooms,
instrumentation laboratories, design testing and
validation, and packaging and distribution.
Projects, Activities, etc.: Research, presenta-
tions and a visit to a medical device company.
Instructional Focus: Small and large group
discussions, presentations, lab activities, and
use of a college text.
