MATHEMATICS IB Mathematical Studies SL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Advanced Algebra Intended Audience: Grades 11 and 12 Credit: Three trimesters = 1.5 credits Major Outcomes: • Sets, logic and probability • Functions and Algebra • Geometry and trigonometry • Statistics • Introduction to Differential Calculus • Financial mathematics • Internal assessment project during the course • IB Exam at end of course Projects, Activities, etc.: Project and written work Instructional Focus: Instruction is provided in a variety of ways using technology (graphing calculator required), hands-on activities and other assessments to prepare for the IB Exam components IB Mathematics 11 SL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Honors Advanced Algebra Intended Audience: Grade 11 Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credit Major Outcomes: • Algebra, functions and equations • Circular functions and trigonometry • Statistics • SL Exam in grade 12 Projects, Activities, etc.: Written work and preparation for senior year exploration Instructional Focus: Instruction encourages students to think at a higher level and combine previous and current knowledge to solve problems. Instruction is focused on preparing students for the IB examination components. High School Registration Guide IB Mathematics 12 SL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Previous year of IB Math 11 SL or Honors Precalculus Intended Audience: Grade 12 Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credit Major Outcomes: • Vectors • Calculus • Internal and external assessments • SL Exam at the end of the year Projects, Activities, etc.: Exploration and written work Instructional Focus: Instruction encourages students to think at a higher level and combine previous and current knowledge to solve prob- lems. Instruction is focused on preparing stu- dents for the IB examination components. [AP Calculus AB/BC]/IB Mathematics HL 11 [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Honors Precalculus Intended Audience: Grades 11 and 12 Credit: Three trimesters = 1.5 credits Major Outcomes: • Functions • Limits, derivatives, integrals • Improper integrals • Partial fractions, infinite series • Parametric, vector, and polar functions Projects, Activities, etc.: Varies by teacher Instructional Focus: Same as AP Calculus AB for first two trimesters [1.0 credit course] and same as AP Calculus BC for one trimester course [0.5 credit course] IB Mathematics 12 HL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Previous year of IB Math 11 HL Intended Audience: Grade 12 Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credit Major Outcomes: • Algebra, functions and equations • Circular functions and trigonometry • Probability • Statistics • Calculus • Limits, Derivations and Integrals • HL Exam in grade 12 • Internal and external assessments Projects, Activities, etc.: Portfolio Instructional Focus: Instruction presented a variety of ways. Investigation of real life situa- tions and applications to mathematical models IB Further Mathematics [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: IB Math 12 HL Intended Audience: Grade 12 at CPHS Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credit Major Outcomes: In IB Math HL, students study a variety of higher level mathematical concepts. There are 4 op- tions in which students study a topic in more detail: Calculus, Statistics and Probability, Dis- crete Mathematics, and Set, Groups, and Rela- tions. The options unit that is done at Champlin Park is the Calculus Option (which aligns with AP Calculus BC). In Further Mathematics, stu- dents complete the remaining 3 options plus 2 additional units of study. These topics include: • Probability and Statistics • Discrete Mathematics • Set Theory • Abstract Algebra • Non-Euclidean Geometry • Differential Equations and Linear Algebra Projects, Activities, etc.: IB Math Internal Assessment (Math Exploration paper) Instructional Focus: Instruction presented in a variety of ways, mainly through flipped class- room (videos). Students will need to be self motivated to learn material and come to class with questions. Investigation of real life situa- tions and application of math models. ELECTIVES IB Music SL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Must also be enrolled in Band III, Choir III or Orchestra III Intended Audience: Grades 11 and 12 Credit: Six trimesters = 3.0 credits Major Outcomes: • Study Western music from Middle Ages to present • Gain awareness of music of selected non-Western cultures • Gain knowledge of rudiments of music • Understand notational systems • Apply these elements by analyzing works of music • Internal and external assessments • SL Exam in grade 12 Projects, Activities, etc.: A musical investigation project, plus one of the following: two compositions, solo performance CD or group performance CD IB Chemistry 12 HL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Honors Chemistry I AND Honors Advanced Algebra Intended Audience: Grade 11 or 12 Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credits, two trimesters taken in the junior or senior year (Honors Chemistry 1 sophomore year is equivalent to Honors IB Chemistry 11) Major Outcomes: • Impart a body of chemistry principles and concepts at a greater depth than SL Chemistry • Apply scientific principles • Synthesize, evaluate, and analyze data gath- ered through scientific experimentation • Develop experimental and inquiry skills • Internal and external assessments • HL Exam in grade 11 or 12 Projects, Activities, etc.: Lab work Instructional Focus: Students considering a sci- ence-related career should take HL Chemistry rather than SL IB Music HL [CPHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Must also be enrolled in Band III, Choir III or Orchestra III Intended Audience: Grades 11 and 12 Credit: Six trimesters = 3.0 credits Major Outcomes: • Study Western music from Middle Ages to present • Gain awareness of music of selected non-Western cultures • Gain knowledge of rudiments of music • Understand notational systems • Apply these elements by analyzing works of music • Internal and external assessments • HL Exam in grade 12 Projects, Activities, etc.: A musical investigation proj- ect, three compositions and a solo performance CD 53
