Description
An exhibition by the University of Valencia at the La Nau Cultural Centre that aims to review the racist stereotypes about black African populations created by Europe during the colonial period . It aims ( in the present tense ), as the exhibition can still be accessed virtually .
To fulfil their task , the curators of this exhibition bring together a selection of four hundred objects , photographs , documents and posters that were clear incentives for popular racism in the late 19th and part of the 20th century . Despite its global intent and its European context , special attention is paid to the case of Spain , specifically to the black settlements , popularly known as “ human zoos ”. These were a widespread way for European countries to bring the African continent and its people closer to Europeans , showing the sub-Saharan population as savages and uncivilised people who needed the protection of the metropolis , thus justifying colonisation and , consequently , the exploitation of its material and human resources . The exhibition aims to construct a critical view of the colonial past in order to break with the colonial vision that continues today .
