Young activists from the group Extinction Rebellion vandalised the statue of Christopher Columbus in front of the Spanish embassy in London with red paint during a protest on 12 October 2021 .
The group Extinction Rebellion Affinity Youth Network demanded in a statement sent to Efe the removal of the monument in honour of Columbus , considering that the “ European invasion ” of America “ initiated by Christopher Columbus ” in 1492 caused numerous deaths among the indigenous people .
The activists who staged the protest carried banners with the slogan “ Columbus must fall ” and also lit a smoke flare next to the monument near the Spanish diplomatic legate jurisdiction .
