Description
In 2021 , some 200 people gathered in front of the Barcelona Immigration Detention Centre ( CIE ) in Zona Franca to demand its closure . During the protest , the demonstrators displayed a banner with the faces , names , ages and years since the deaths of people in some of these centres . In various tweets , some protesters criticised the fact that these centres do not “ respect human rights ”.
This protest joined a long tradition of demonstrations against immigration detention centres in Barcelona , Valencia , Madrid and other cities , which we have documented since 2013 .
There are currently seven immigration detention centres in Spain : Madrid ( Aluche ), Barcelona ( Zona Franca ), Murcia ( Sangonera ), Valencia ( Zapadores ), Algeciras ( La Piñera ), Tenerife ( Hoya Fría ) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ( Barranco Seco ).
