449.628 , the Member and / or Hospital will take all reasonable steps to transfer the patient to a Member who will honor the patient ’ s advance directive . Under no circumstances will a patient be abandoned or put in a situation where care is compromised or not provided as a result of a Member ’ s conscientious objection to a patient ’ s advance directive .
RULE 3-16 A .
Treatment of Family Members and Self
Members of the Medical Staff should not act as a physician to themselves or their immediate family members ( first degree relatives , spouse , and children ) in the following situations unless it is an emergency and no viable alternative treatment options exists in the Renown system : 1 . Any procedure requiring written informed consent in any setting ;
2 . Any procedure that might be life-threatening or that uses life- threatening modalities as part of the treatment ( e . g ., cancer chemotherapy );
3 . Any orders directing the care of themselves , immediate family members ( first degree relatives , spouse , and children ) inclusive of imaging studies ( inpatient or outpatient );
4 . Exceptions for outpatient lab and pharmacy services , unless prohibited by licensure . Lab and pharmacy may accept orders from providers for themselves and their family members , within licensure , e . g ., no controlled substances .
B . Rule for Members Treating Family Members .
1 . If a Medical Staff Member desires to act as physician to a family member in any Hospital facility , the Member first must notify the Chief of Staff and CMO / VPMA to review the situation prior to the initiation of the diagnostic / therapeutic plan , or as soon thereafter as such notification reasonably may be made , and attest to :
a . the necessity of the plan / procedure ; b . c . the lack of viable treatment alternatives ; and
the provision of informed consent by the patient that addresses the patient ’ s understanding of the risks of :
( 1 ) Coercion ; ( 2 ) Conflict of interest ;
( 3 ) The complexities that might arise in the event that the patient experiences a bad outcome ; and
