Planning for the Next Generation
Recruiting physicians is an important component of expanding our care . Our current hiring goals include recruiting nine doctors and advanced practice providers . Our team , including colleagues from the University of Nevada , Reno , are planning to develop the first ever cardiology fellowship and vascular surgery fellowship in northern Nevada to train the next generation of cardiovascular physicians . In a region growing as fast as ours , we recognize the importance of investing in a pipeline of cardiovascular specialists which will greatly impact our community ' s access to well-trained physicians .
Meeting the Growing Needs
Northern Nevada has grown significantly in the past decade . As we look to the future of healthcare services in the area , Renown Health is expanding its South Meadows Medical Center campus . The upgrades to the existing medical center include enhanced technology integration , expansions to surgical and procedure areas , private rooms and improvements to public spaces . For the heart care team , the South Meadows expansion will include two new catheterization labs , and a new , larger office space that will include cardiac imaging and pharmacy services .
At Renown Regional Medical Center , expansions have been completed in Tahoe Tower , where brand new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit , Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Trauma Intensive Care Unit floors opened in spring 2023 . On the ground floor of this tower , we will be completing the upgrades of our fourth catheterization lab , bringing all four up to date with the latest technology .
New Life-Saving Treatments
The Institute for Heart & Vascular Health is proud to announce its plans to provide extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ( ECMO ), an advanced form of life support , at Renown Regional Medical Center . Renown would be the first hospital in northern Nevada , and the second in the state to offer this life-saving treatment for certain critically ill patients . ECMO helps provide support to the heart and / or lungs by artificially pumping blood out of the veins , oxygenating the blood , and delivering it back to the body .
Renown is also investing in new technology to treat atrial fibrillation ( A-fib ), a condition characterized by an irregular heart rhythm ( arrhythmia ). The FARAPULSEā„¢ Pulsed Field Ablation System is a new tool used in cardiac ablation that will provide our team with a faster , safer and more effective technology to treat A-fib . This system will be available in our new cardiac catheterization labs .
Our Structural Heart team is tracking exciting developments in percutaneous tricuspid valve repair , which is a procedure ( like percutaneous mitral valve repair already performed at Renown ) that treats one of the four values that control blood flow through the heart when it is leaking . While normally treated surgically , this non-surgical approach is currently only available regionally at specific institutions in California and Utah as part of a research study . We are posed to be first to market , bringing another safer , non-surgical valve repair technique to the region .
