was chosen before blue kitchens were as popular as they are now . The plan was always for the island to be this rich saturated blue , but when they started to work on the drawings it felt lost in a sea of white , so Christine took the blue up the cabinets on either side of the hall . The light fixtures , which were purchased a few years earlier , carry the same brushed nickel finish as the rest of the home but a warm brass was introduced in the hardware to bring warmth into the cool color palette . To leave a bit more room in the budget , the decision was made to use affordable IKEA cabinetry for the laundry room . This was then custom sprayed a lighter blue which helps the windowless space feel bright and fresh . A crown and additional trim were added to give the space a custom look .
When renovating a kitchen , it ’ s important to pay attention to your own habits and routines . Having lived in the home for a number of years , the homeowners and
their young boys had developed routines as to where certain items were placed and how space was used . It was important to ensure those could be maintained when determining the size and placement of new cabinetry .
The final layout offers a lot of functional and usable storage . On the back side of the island , shallow cabinets hide smaller appliances that only get used occasionally . We also did the same on the back of the peninsula . On the living room side , the panels are actually doors that have become a great place to store toys . The kitchen features a coffee ‘ garage ’ that frees up counter space and a hidden command center to keep track of the boys ’ activities on the island near the dining table .
