This English Cottage project was designed with a growing family in mind . Their goal was to have the warmth and coziness of a small English cottage but with a functional 3,500 square foot floor plan in the heart of North York . The homeowners wanted to create a unique and functional space where the whole family could come together and relax . This included an expansive primary bedroom featuring his and hers ensuite bathrooms so each can have a space of their own . The homeowners also chose to place a Jack and Jill bathroom between the two childrens ’ bedrooms to allow easy access for both in the future .
Designer Jesse Sahlani wanted the design of the home to take advantage of as much natural light as possible . Jesse ’ s detailed approach to sketching and studying the sun revealed that the house could take advantage of up to 11 hours of natural light . This information was used to determine window placement and sizing that would best maximize natural light within the home . An open concept design allows this light to flow freely between the kitchen , dining and family rooms . That open concept feeling was maintained with a flush mount large format sliding door to the exterior entertaining space that keeps the indoors and outdoors feeling connected !
For the exterior of the home , Sahlani was inspired by the unique architecture of the English countryside . This timeless design was achieved through the use of a blend of natural stone , cedar shake roofing , and unique aluminum details . No expense was spared during this project and it shows ! You would never be able to tell if it was a renovation and addition or a new custom home , and that should always be the goal .
