COTTAGE STYLE LIVING
AN 1,100 SQUARE FOOT OPEN CONCEPT WALKOUT BASEMENT
GETS A MAKEOVER.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE
SPACE’S DESIGN?
RACHAEL LOCKHART
This 1,100 square foot open
concept walkout basement is
located in the home of a couple
with four adult children. They
wanted a space where their
children and spouses could
stay and also double as a rental
space. They wanted it to feel
comfortable and cozy so I made
the fireplace the focal point.
The homeowners really
liked cottage style living but
also wanted the space to
complement the rest of their
English-inspired home. To
achieve the cottage look, I
stayed within the hues of natural
woods, beiges, browns, and
whites. I went with white and
off-white throw pillows that had
texture and balanced out the
brown in the sofas. The use of
white was continued throughout
the space with the coffee table,
walls, kitchen cabinets, and a
white based quartz countertop

with whisps of gray. For a touch
of elegant sophistication, I added
deep blue hues in the throw
pillows and accent chair. We
wanted to give the space a touch
of modern as well so I opted
to use bronze finishes in the
kitchen with door handles, and
continued the look throughout
the light fixtures. Lastly, I added
an accent wall behind the work
station in a chevron pattern to
keep it modern.
CHT WHERE DID YOU SAVE
AND SPLURGE?
RL We were able to save on
furniture. Most of the pieces
they already owned, including
the sofas, coffee table, dining
table and chairs, bed, and side
table.
We splurged in the kitchen,
with a quartz countertop;
new flooring throughout the
basement, and all the items that
were used to outfit the space
such as the throw pillows, picture
frames, light fixtures above the
dining and kitchen island, the
molding work surrounding
the fireplace, the accent wall
abutting the work station and the
solid piece of raw edge maple
wood cut down to make a work
desk. - Space designed by Rachael Lockhart
