GeoTone CIC – worked with Gatis Community Space
Activities and Participants Participatory installation , audio creation , geolocation sound , creative writing , mapping ( drawing , clay modelling ). 117 participants .
Youth workshops Workshop 1 : creating character sheets and stories for the lanterns that would feature in the lantern parade . Workshop 2 : recording the sounds that would feature in the telling of the lanterns ’ story , for use in a geolocated audio walk that follows the route of the lantern parade . Intention to work with young people to create a fantasy folklore that speaks to Whitmore Reans , and feature it as part of the lantern parade . Intention to use this to creatively explore what Whitmore Reans means to people .
Audio Creation Workshop ‘ What is the soundtrack of your Neighbourhood ?’ A drop-in session to make the soundtrack to accompany the Gatis Lantern Parade around Whitmore Reans . Using microphones , instruments and digital effects to record the sounds of Gatis and Whitmore Reans , as well as capturing local stories , creating characters and exploring mysteries . For all adults and young people aged 10 +; Intention to invite people to engage with ways of expressing Whitmore Reans sonically . The framing of this inquiry was the folkloric tale of the Lantern parade .
Treasure hunt A treasure hunt for young people , culminating in a trip to the on-site installation of the red telephone box where they were asked to share their experiences and views about the area .
Interviews & map-making Recorded interviews and conversations with visitors and volunteers , often using a map of Whitmore Reans as the starting point . Intended to create a map of the area , featuring places of importance and significance . Intention to holistically capture people ’ s experiences , thoughts and ideas about the area , community . The conversations often took their visit to Gatis as a starting point and often centred around the nature of community and their connection – or lack of connection – with the area .
Key outcomes
• People were very proud of their area but felt as though there were distinct issues which gave the area a bad reputation . A clear issue that came up multiple times was litter and fly-tipping . Solutions such as community skips and informal litter-picking initiatives came up frequently .
