Are you bear smart ? Co-existence is a community effort and don ’ t forget that a fed bear is a dead bear and we should keep them wild . Black Bears are native to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains . You may encounter a bear ( even in town ) because some bears have lost their fear of people . Black bears are wild animals , but if you take precautions , your chances of being injured are extremely low .

“ Bear Smart ” Checklist
• Lock your trash in an animal-resistant metal enclosure ( Bear Shed / Bear Box )
• Don ’ t leave food or food wrappers in vehicles . Lock vehicle and set car alarm .
• Keep your home and garage doors closed .
• Rinse the recycling , it must be squeaky clean .
• Never approach , feed or attempt to touch bears .
• Close doors and windows while cooking .
• Do not use a bird feeder .
• Always feed your pets indoors .
• Clean the barbeque after each use
