The Chanticleer – a proud and fierce rooster – is the mascot for the University ’ s athletic programs , derived from the crafty , quickthinking rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer ’ s ‘ Canterbury Tales ,’ specifically , ‘ The Nun ’ s Priest Tale .’ of professor of history at the University .
Since his arrival , Benson has secured the largest donation in school history : a $ 10 million gift from Conway Medical Center . The endowed funds support the University ’ s newly opened Conway Medical Center College of Health and Human Performance as well as Chanticleer Athletics . In May 2022 , he led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thompson Library , a $ 29.8 million , two-story , 64,000-square-foot facility .
CCU , which welcomed back-toback record-setting freshman classes in Fall 2021 ( 2,519 students ) and Fall 2022 ( 2,653 students ), has a total enrollment of 10,337 .
The University offers baccalaureate degrees in 104 majors . Among CCU ’ s graduate-level programs are 27 master ’ s degrees , one educational specialist degree , and two doctoral programs : the Ph . D . in marine science : coastal and marine systems science , and the Ph . D . in education sciences . The most popular undergraduate majors are marine science , management , psychology , exercise and sport science , and marketing . CCU boasts a growing array of internship , research , and international opportunities for students , as well as numerous online programs through Coastal Online . Many of CCU ’ s premier academic programs were established in response to opportunities connected to the local environment and economy .
Capitalizing on its proximity to the coast , CCU has built a worldclass marine science program . Research conducted by the marine science department plays a vital role in shaping public policy relating to coastal resource management issues along the South Carolina and U . S . coastline . To help support Myrtle Beach ’ s famed golfing industry , CCU launched the PGA Golf Management program , which is one of only 18 such programs in the country accredited by the PGA of
America .
CCU has been consistently recognized by U . S . News & World Report , including being highly ranked among Southern regional universities in the “ Best Value ” category consistently for the past 11 years . The Best Value category calculation takes into account the school ’ s academic quality and net cost of attendance . Coastal Carolina is the first institution in South Carolina to be recognized for meeting exceptional standards of inclusion by Strive for College .
The University has 115 main buildings on its walkable campus , comprised of 621 acres , including the Coastal Science Center and the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies , located in the Atlantic Center on U . S . 501 , and the General James
Hackler Golf Course , a public 18- hole golf facility located adjacent to the campus . A 1,105-acre tract that includes a portion of Waties Island , one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in South Carolina , provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in marine science and wetlands biology on an Atlantic coast barrier island .
CCU ’ s 19 athletic programs compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Sun Belt Conference , which participates in the Football Bowl Subdivision – the highest level in intercollegiate athletics . CCU ’ s first-ever national championship came in 2016 , when the baseball program captured the College World Series title .
During the last three years , the University gained tremendous national exposure thanks to the unprecedented success of the Chanticleer football program , which has competed in three consecutive bowl games .
