CURRENT

EVENTS

There has always been conflict between religions, but with contemporary technology, this hatred towards other religions is now amplified. In the three most prominent monotheistic religions, there have been threatening acts of aggression and prejudice towards those who practice.

On November 5th, 2017, a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas was attacked by a man named Devin Patrick Kelley, who had a history of assault. The shooting took place during regular service on a Sunday. 26 people were killed and 20 more were injured. One of the victims was the pastor’s daughter, who was fourteen years old. After the shooting, the pastor Frank Pomeroy spoke out, “We have the freedom to choose, and rather than choose darkness like the young man did that day we choose the light." The church is now a memorial, where the walls are painted white and the white chairs inside each have a rose resting on top. The choice of white walls can represent purity or reaching purity. Christians in the area are extremely saddened by the attacks, and hope nothing like it happens again. To quote the Bible, “[Rebels] must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what it is not right to teach” (Titus 1, Line 11). This quote can represent what many people are thinking right now, in that people want to shut out those who are threatening families or holy and religious buildings (Texas).
