Rejuvenation Fall 2014 | Page 12

In all seriousness, would you stick around with a friend who fat shamed you, or called you ugly or a loser? I'm guessing that you would get up and walk away, and this is because at your core, you know these things to be untrue. Stop saying ugly things to yourself. Take yourself on best friend dates to movies or restaurants. Buy yourself pretty gifts. Write yourself love notes! While all other relationships in your life carry an element of uncertainty, this is the one, my friends, that will endure. You will always be there for you. You will always have to look at yourself in the mirror. So put your investment there. It's the one that pays off the most.

3. Tell yourself ten nice things about your appearance everyday. If this is too hard at first, I'll negotiate and go down to three. Add an additional compliment everyday until you're up to ten. Say them out loud. To yourself. In the mirror. Go on! Do it! I'll wait...

The reason you must do this is because while at first it may feel ridiculous and like farce, eventually you really do start believing it! That girl (or guy) in the mirror, do you know how much crap she has put up with from you?? It's a wonder she doesn't just walk away from you, never to be seen again. But she hasn't. There she is. She has shown up for you every single day of your life. It's about time you do the same for her.

4. Know that you're a worthy investment. You are worth the time it takes to fix your hair. You are worth spending a little money on to get clothing that fits (or hiring someone who can help you find it, hint hint.) It's okay for you to step away from your family to go to the gym. They might protest at first, but in the end, it will benefit them too. If you're happier, healthier, and more confident, everyone wins.

5. Be your own best friend. Really. Friends come and go, sometimes even the friends you swore would always be there for you. You, however, will always be there with you, for you. So this is a relationship of convenience if nothing else. (I kid!)
